Distinguished and Famous people from The Tropical Coast

📖 Edmund James Banfield

Edmund Banfield left newspaper work and settled with his wife on Dunk Island in 1897, hoping the change would improve his health. His island life became the basis of the writings that made him known as the Beachcomber. Farming supplied maize, fruit, vegetables and livestock, but could not cover all their needs, so provisions from the steamer remained important. His interest in wildlife could even take priority over income: when birds damaged an apiary, he refused to kill them because he regarded the island as a sanctuary. The life behind the books mixed close observation, practical difficulties and a strong attachment to the coastal environment.

🌿 John and Alison Busst

John and Alison Busst's home at Bingil Bay became a base for campaigning to protect North Queensland's reef and rainforest. They had previously lived on Bedarra Island before building at Ninney Point. John, an artist and craftsman, used letters, personal contacts and persistent argument to challenge proposals threatening the region's natural environments. The Save the Reef campaign developed from this local setting into a much wider political effort. Their story combines the private enjoyment of a tropical home with the demanding public work of conservation, conducted through correspondence and organising rather than simply admiring the view.

🏖️ Harold and Zara Holt

Harold and Zara Holt had a holiday connection with this part of the tropical coast, visiting Bedarra Island and buying land at Bingil Bay in 1960. Harold's friendship with John Busst dated back to their school and university years in Melbourne. The coastal visits also supplied an alarming boating episode: in rough conditions, a group including Busst and Holt had to swim back to the island after their small boat nearly capsized. Their documented association belongs to visits and a holiday property interest, giving the area a specific place in the Holts' private lives alongside Harold's national political career.
